Scientists have discovered fossilized teeth in Ethiopia’s Afar region, which may belong to an unidentified hominin species, according to reports from Smithsonian Magazine.
Dating back between 2.6 and 3 million years, this finding sheds light on a little-known period of human evolution, indicating that at least four hominin lineages coexisted in East Africa.
**A Glimpse into a Missing Segment of Evolution**
The fossils, which include teeth from an early Homo species and Australopithecus, bridge a 500,000-year gap in the fossil record.
This timeframe aligns with the decline of Australopithecus afarensis, epitomized by the famous „Lucy,” and the rise of the genus Homo.
Researchers claim that this discovery offers rare proof that early Homo species lived alongside Australopithecus around 2.6 million years ago.
**A Potential New Australopithecus Species**
The teeth from Australopithecus show considerable variation from well-documented species such as A. afarensis and A. garhi, leading scientists to propose the likelihood of a new species.
Nonetheless, the remains are devoid of distinct defining traits, hindering any official classification.
Published in the journal Nature, the research pinpoints the location as Ledi-Geraru, which is already recognized for early Homo fossil discoveries.

Should the hypothesis hold true, the results suggest that separate hominins (early Homo, Paranthropus, A. garhi, and the newly identified Australopithecus from Ledi-Geraru) coexisted simultaneously in East Africa.
This supports the notion that human evolution did not progress in a linear fashion, but rather through a branching process, with multiple species cohabiting and utilizing shared resources.
Such interactions may have driven evolutionary adaptations that ultimately resulted in the rise of Homo sapiens.
